NSW car enthusiasts will soon pay up to $500 a year to adorn their vehicles with new metallic number plates.

Standard RTA-issue and personalised plates will be available in four combinations of silver and gold with black letters and numbers from August 29.

"Personalised number plates have been available for several years and are becoming increasingly popular," NSW Roads Minister Joe Tripodi said when launching the new range yesterday.

"Customers will now have four more choices with these new metallic plates."

Standard versions of the new plates will set motorists back $100 annually, while those preferring their own combinations of letters and numbers can expect to pay up to $500 per year.

There will also be a one-off, $30 order fee for each plate.

The new plates mean NSW drivers can now choose from 11 different styles as well as the standard issue black-on-yellow registration plates.
