Police in New Zealand's capital have recovered nearly 200 stolen personalised plates, ending what was said to be ``an unusual personal hobby".

The Dominion Post newspaper said police made a surprise raid on a home in Northland, Wellington, after a tip-off from a member of the public.

They seized 190 plates stolen over five months, including PESTY, GOFLOW, LAWN and POPPSI.

Acting Detective Sergeant Bruce Mackay said the haul came after a long inquiry. ``Just in terms of man-hours expended, this has been a complete and utter waste of time," he said.

In New Zealand, personalised number plates cost $437 a set.
